With summer right around the corner here in Lincoln, there are endless opportunities for family fun, especially for parents with small children/toddlers! Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities, educational experiences, or places to cool off, this guide provides a variety of options that are perfect for your little ones. Below is your go-to list for making the most of your summer here in Lincoln, NE.

1. Visit the Lincoln Children’s Zoo – My kiddos FAVORITE!

Families with young children should make time to visit the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. Children may get up close and personal with animals through interactive exhibits at this zoo, which makes for a fun and valuable experience. My kids love having the opportunity to feed and interact with the giraffes. Seasonal events and activities are also available, such as 4-5 day camps and also tots and turtles which is a 6-week toddler and parent education program. My family loves this zoo because it is rarely ever over-crowded and also if it is a very hot day they have a fun splash pad bonus for the little ones to cool off in!

2. Explore Antelope Park and Playground

Another fan favorite would be Antelope Park. It is HUGE and if you can remember as a child going to the big parks was always a highlight! The spacious playground has swings, slides, and climbing structures made for children, as well as toddler-appropriate equipment. The park is an excellent location for a family picnic because of its open field areas. After playing, you may stroll around the lovely pond in the park, where your toddler can feed the ducks or just take in the fresh air.

3. Head on over to the Sunken Gardens

If you’re seeking a quiet and beautiful place to spend time with your toddler/children, the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln is a hidden gem. This stunning garden offers a perfect opportunity to introduce your children to nature. They also have Koi fish that you can feed while strolling along. You can wander along the pathways, enjoy the colorful flowers, and it’s an ideal spot for family photos (no-pun intended 😉 ). The peaceful atmosphere also makes it a wonderful place for a leisurely walk or a picnic.

4. Pioneers Park Nature Center

For kids who enjoy the outdoors, Pioneers Park Nature Center is a great option. Your child can enjoy strolling and taking in the scenery on the more than two miles of paths. Your child will be fascinated by the center’s many wildlife exhibits, which include birds, turtles, and deer. You can also learn about the plants and animals that live in Nebraska at the educational nature center. At the back of the park is a look-out where you will spot Buffalo roaming free!

5. Take a Trip to the Lincoln Children’s Museum

Who doesn’t love a good Children’s Museum? The Lincoln Children’s Museum is designed with toddlers in mind, offering a hands-on, interactive experience that encourages imaginative play and learning. It’s an excellent place to encourage your child’s inner curiosity. They have a variety of exhibit areas that cover everything from science to art. Your child will enjoy all of the activities that are specifically made to appeal to their senses, whether they are building in the construction zone or acting like they are shopping at the market.

6. Visit the Haymarket Farmers Market – MY favorite spot on a Saturday Morning

The Haymarket Farmers Market runs from May- October and is a fun family friendly spot to visit on weekends, offering a variety of local produce, baked goods, and crafts. They also have live performances and innovative arts and crafts for purchase.

7. Attend a Family-Friendly Event at the Railyard

During the summer months, the Railyard in downtown Lincoln hosts family-friendly events, including outdoor concerts, movies, and activities. It’s a great place to take little ones, as there is plenty of space for them to run around, and the events are usually relaxed and kid-friendly. The outdoor environment offers a lively atmosphere without feeling overwhelming, and you can grab a snack from one of the local vendors to enjoy while you watch the performances.
