How to Prepare for a Studio Newborn Photoshoot-Step-by-Step Guide
It is an invaluable experience to document your newborn’s first few days of life. It is a memory you will forever cherish. My area of expertise as a professional newborn photographer in Lincoln, Nebraska, is producing timeless photos that families will treasure for a lifetime. I’ve created this comprehensive guide on how to get ready and prepare for your studio newborn photoshoot so you can relax and get the most of the experience- Beautiful Images!
1. Schedule your newborn session in advance
The most suitable period for capturing newborn photos is within the first 5-17 days of life, during this age, babies are still quite sleepy and will naturally cuddle up in those cute womb-like positions. Booking your photoshoot during your second or third trimester will guarantee availability and also takes the stress off of trying to find a last minute photographer after baby is born. Typically photographers will pencil in your due date for booking and schedule a firm date once baby arrives.
2. Feed baby right before the session
A full belly helps babies to stay comfortable and be very sleepy. In the prep guide that is sent over prior to a photo session with me, it states to either feed your baby just before you leave for the studio or as soon as you arrive. If you’re bottle-feeding, bring extra formula or breast milk in case the baby needs a little extra. If breastfeeding, we have a comfortable space in the studio where you can nurse and/or pump as needed.
3. Dress baby in a loose fitted sleeper
To avoid pressure marks on your newborn’s delicate skin, dress them in a loose-fitting onesie or zip-up sleeper (avoid tight socks or elastic waistbands). We will wrap the baby in soft fabric wraps and provide adorable outfits from our fully stocked studio wardrobe. Dressing babies in loose fitting outfits also helps to not disturb them while if they have fallen asleep on the ride over.
4. Bring along the essential newborn items
To ensure a smooth session, pack a diaper bag with:
- Extra diapers and wipes (I also have some if you forget them!)
- A pacifier (even if your baby doesn’t typically use one, it can help soothe them during posing)
- A change of clothes for both baby and parents
- Any sentimental items you’d like to include in the photos such as a keepsake passed down from generations, parents work uniform, or even a cute teddy if wanted.
5. What to wear
Typically for parents and siblings I always recommend simple and neutrals for outfit choices. Soft, muted tones like beige, white, gray, or pastels photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby. Avoid bold patterns or logos. Patterns are good as they also add texture and depth to the final images. As part of my newborn photography services in Lincoln, NE, I offer a fully stocked client wardrobe with beautiful, photo ready outfits for moms, babies and children up to 5y to make the process stress-free. We will plan outfits accordingly!
6. Prepare Siblings (If Applicable)
If there are older siblings that are joining in on the session, talk to them beforehand about what to expect. Bring along their favorite toy or snack to keep them occupied. I also have a kid friendly table with coloring books and games. We usually start with newborn only poses and then family and sibling portraits following.
7. Stay Relaxed and Enjoy the Experience
Newborn sessions can take anywhere from 1.5-3 hours in length as baby is boss. This also allows time for feeding, soothing, and capturing a variety of poses to fill your gallery. My studio is designed to be comfortable, so you can sit back and enjoy the process while I handle the details.
8. Trust Your Photographer
With years of experience in newborn photography, I know how to safely pose and handle your baby (Also being a mom of 5) Every session is led by your baby’s comfort, and safety is always my top priority. If your baby needs extra time to settle, we take breaks as needed.
9. Get Ready to Treasure Your Photos Forever | Prepare for a studio newborn photoshoot
After your session, I carefully hand edit each image to create stunning, heirloom-quality portraits. You’ll have the opportunity to choose from a variety of print products, albums, and digital images to preserve these precious memories.
10. Above all, you’ve just done the most powerful thing you will ever do! Create a life. Enjoy the now and get in those images with your children! They will forever love to look back at them. I promise
