Many people have heard the term and wonder what is a Rainbow Baby?
“A Rainbow baby is a term used for a healthy baby born after the loss of a baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death. The idea comes from a rainbow appearing in the sky after a storm, or after a dark and turbulent time.”
Celebrating a pregnancy after the loss of a child looks different for everyone and you are not alone. So many of us have been where you are – including me.
Let’s prepare for your Angel baby maternity session or newborn session
Sometimes emotions are at an all time high during this time in your lives and it is totally normal. You do not have to feel guilty about celebrating this baby and being happy again.
How to honor your Rainbow child during your maternity or newborn session
During a maternity session I have fabrics the color of the rainbow that we can use to show the joy of your rainbow baby. If you had any jewelry made to represent your baby, bring that along. We can drape the necklace/bracelet/ring across your belly to involve both children.
For Newborn photography sessions, we can photograph your baby holding onto a special item that represents their older sibling such as jewelry, or have them next to a stuffed animal. I also have rainbow props and lovies (tiny felt items that fit perfectly in the hands of your newborns) that we can use for your newborn to hold on tight too.
If you have a maternity session we can use the same items used for your maternity session and implement them into your newborn session.
It is also okay to not want to do anything specific to represent your angel baby and that is perfectly fine I want to respect you and your significant other during this time. Just know mama I am here for you to lean on if you need as well as to create memories to cherish forever.
Alicia and her husband came to me for their maternity session in Atlanta, GA. They are expecting a rainbow baby girl. We did their maternity session with the same workflow as I usually do we just added a rainbow touch to document the loss of their previous child. Here are a few of the images captured from their pregnancy photoshoot.
Lastly, If you are considering a newborn or maternity session for yourself don’t hesitate to reach out. I would love to document this special time for you and your family.
